Barlean’s Organic Oils agreed to pay over $1.6 million as part of a settlement to resolve claims its coconut oil products are not “healthy” as advertised. No proof of purchase is required for consumers to benefit.
The settlement benefits consumers who purchased Barlean’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (16-, 32- or 60-ounce), Barlean’s Organic Culinary Coconut Oil (32-, or 60-ounce) or Barlean’s Organic Butter Flavored Coconut Oil (16- or 32-ounce) between Jan. 24, 2015, and Nov. 10, 2022.
Barlean’s Organic Oils sells various types of oils and oil-based supplements, including several types of coconut oils. According to a class action lawsuit, the brand misleadingly markets its coconut oil as “healthy” and able to boost “metabolism, supports the heart and immune system and provides quick energy.”
In reality, coconut oil is allegedly connected to severe health issues such as stroke and heart disease due to its 90% saturated fat content. Plaintiffs say Barlean’s knows the truth about coconut oil’s health risks but chose to market its products with misleading claims about coconut oil’s health benefits. Consumers in the coconut oil class action lawsuit say they wouldn’t have purchased the products or paid as much if they had known the truth about coconut oil health risks.
Barlean’s hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1,612,500 class action settlement to resolve these allegations.
Under the terms of the class action lawsuit settlement, class members can collect a cash payment for each Barlean’s Coconut Oil they purchased.
With proof of purchase, class members can collect up to 100% reimbursement for all of the products they purchased.
Without proof of purchase, class members can receive between $3 and $7 per product, depending on size and type, and may claim up to five units of product.
If more claims are submitted than expected, payments may be reduced on a pro rata basis proportional to the value of each claim. Class members who claim a higher value and/or a larger number of units would receive a larger proportional share of the settlement fund than class members who claim a lower value or a smaller number of units.
If any funds remain in the coconut oil lawsuit settlement after distribution, the money will be donated to the Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition or another non-profit approved by the court.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 19, 2023.
The final approval hearing for the coconut oil lawsuit settlement is scheduled for March 3, 2023.
In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 19, 2023.
