We all want more bang for our buck, and when one man performed a cheeky act at a supermarket salad bar, that’s certainly what he was attempting to get. If you’ve not packed lunch and you’re in the office, popping to the nearby supermarket is a must – and as part of New Year’s resolutions, many people may be opting for the salad bar. But one man was using the salad bar to try and get more cheese for less cash when he filled up a tub with grated cheddar, sneakily scoring more fromage at a lower cost – with extras too. While at Morrisons, Elliot William from Preston, Lancashire, decided he was going to get a salad bar option as part of his meal deal, which costs £3.50 with a More card. You can also choose a drink and dessert for £3.50. But the 36-year-old filled his bowl with grated cheese, making sure he flattened it as much as possible – and he even secured it with an elastic band. He also picked the most expensive drink available with the meal deal – a smoothie that cost £2.35 out of the deal – and a protein yoghurt. He said: “Cheese is one of the most expensive items on the salad bar. It was a social experiment to see how much cheese I could get into the tub. The cheese tasted fine. Some people on TikTok said they wouldn’t eat cheese that’s been breathed on, but I had no problem with it.” He then explained that in Morrisons, it costs £2.80 for 500 grams of cheese, and he got more than that, for less. “I could have got more but I didn’t want the tub to be overflowing with cheese”, he explained. Elliot also shared that he got a smoothie and a protein yoghurt “worth more than £4 for 70p.” Elliot’s hack has received a mixed response on TikTok, with some calling him genius, and others saying they’d rather pay than eat “communal cheese.” “The salad bar cheese has been breathed over though”, someone fumed, but another commented: “My friend, this is why we follow you, the research and commitment is unparalleled. We salute you.” Another social media user concluded this was why they would never get any cheese, penning: “This is why there’s never any cheese in the salad bar”, and Elliot jokingly replied: “The game’s the game.” The Mirror has contacted Morrisons for comment.
