Billy Gardell revealed he is no longer a diabetic following his impressive 150-pound weight loss after undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2021.
The 53-year-old actor, who at his heaviest was a staggering 370 pounds and was suffering from Type 2 diabetes decided it was time to take better care of himself for his own self and for his family.
As he reflected on adhering to a healthier lifestyle to trim down, raved about finally being able to shop for clothing at stores and his diet consisting of ‘small but very healthy’ meals.
‘I think you got to find peace with yourself and at some point, look in the mirror and go you know, it’s probably time to take care of you,’ the Mike & Molly star told Entertainment Tonight.
Gardell, who admits that he still loves to smoke, continued: ‘Then I didn’t get that note early on. So I’m a big believer that when you get it, you get it. It doesn’t matter when. As long as you get it.’

As of now, the father-of-one, who stated that he ‘floats between 205 and 210’ pounds, is ‘walking around pretty healthy these days.’
While he said it has ‘been a real gift’ being able to find clothing more easily, Gardell explained ‘the health stuff’ has been ‘the big thing.’
In addition to no longer suffering from type 2 diabetes, his ‘resting heartbeat went from 113 to 68.’
‘I eat like all the people I used to make fun of, to be honest,’ he quipped. ‘I’ve got my fill and now I’m at the place where I can have a couple bites of something decadent if I want.’
Gardell told readers that ‘self care is important,’ but admitted his last vice that he is trying to quit is ‘smoking cigarettes.’
For those considering getting gastric bypass operation, the Pennsylvania native said that the surgery is just ‘the beginning.’
‘Because what you have to commit to on the other side of it is what you need to look at … if you’re not willing to commit to that routine. Don’t do it. But if you’re ready to commit to that on a daily basis, proof’s in the pudding,’ he concluded.
He also contributed fatherhood for motivating him to take steps to live longer and be able to attend all of his 20-year-old son William’s biggest milestones.
‘I have a child, and as you hit 50, you start doing that dad math, like, ‘If I can live 25 more years, then he’ll be 40. So I want to be here for him,’ he noted.

Gardell then looked back on how he has ‘been an example in a lot of good ways for’ child but not ‘a good example of health for him.’
‘And so I want him to see that it doesn’t matter what age you are. If you are willing to do something a day at a time, you can change anything. That’s the message I wanted him to get,’ the performer said.
Gardell is best known for starring on Sullivan & Son and Bob Hearts Abishola as well as the voice of Santa in Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas.
He has been married to wife Patty Knight since 2001.
